Bean Sí Comb | Irish Folklore | T-Shirt

£21.00

If you find a comb on the ground, do not pick it up. It might belong to the Bean Sí. Some warnings are worth heeding.

Fág ansin é. Leave it there.

The Bean Sí is one of the most well-known figures in Irish folklore. She is not evil at all. She is a messenger. A woman of the Sí whose cry tells you that death is coming for someone near you. She is often seen combing her long hair, and if she leaves that comb behind, the old folk belief is clear. Leave it alone.

The accounts in the Dúchas archive, written down by Irish schoolchildren in the 1930s from stories their grandparents told them, follow the same pattern every time. Someone finds a comb. Someone brings it home. And at night she comes crying at the window for it back.

I love how real these stories feel. Not some far off fairy tale but something that happened to someone down the road. The white comb on the dresser. The midnight crying. The iron tongs twisted out of shape after she took it back.

This drawing came out of falling down that particular rabbit hole, and there is quite a bit hidden in it if you look closely. If you want the full story behind the drawing, including the iron tongs and the seven dead pigs, you can read it here:https://roisinmallonart.com/blog/bean-si-comb-banshee-irish-folklore
